EOL (生命百科全書), 由有“生物多樣性之父”之稱的哈佛大學教授Edward O. Wilson于2005年倡導發起，隨后美國、澳大利亞等多個國家的大學和科研機構都支持并聯合參與該項目，2007年5月正式對外發布。EOL的基本構想是建立“生命百科全書網站”（http://www.eol.org/），在未來10年內，將地球上已知的180萬種生物物種的信息整合在這個網站上，并免費向公眾開放。該百科全書將主要關注動物、植物、菌類，未來還將增加微生物，這些物種信息包括每個物種的文字描述、照片、分布地圖、音頻、視頻以及業余愛好者的觀測資料等，同時包括與基因圖譜、相關專業文獻的鏈接，實現對物種綜合信息的“一站式”查詢。目前，該項目又得到了歐洲一些科研機構的合作支持。

　　鑒于此，中科院植物所，動物所，微生物所的相關科研人員也積極地參與到EOL項目中，欲盡快啟動EOL中國項目。

　　生物多樣性委員會特邀來自smithsonian institution的三位專家James Edwards，Cynthia Parr和Thomas Garnett向大家介紹EOL的特點及使用方法等。中方的相關科研人員亦會結合各自的研究方向做精彩報告，并且與3位外國專家磋商。以下是本次研討會的會議議程，歡迎各位師生前來參加！
